So, what is all the hype with hypnobirthing? Hypnobirthing can often be associated with homebirths, although it really is a treasure chest of tools to accompany parents on the journey of pregnancy and birth, whether you choose birth at home or hospital.

Emma Porcelli, Hypnobirthing Practitioner (Dip HB KGH) shares her hypnobirthing knowledge. Check out her words of wisdom…

“You may not have control of how your baby decides to arrive on earth, but you will be equipped with confidence - and will have complete control of how to feel and work with your bundle of joy to bring your baby in. Teamwork makes the dream work. More ‘mums-to-be’ are opting for homebirths due to the recent changes with hospitals adhering to Covid protocol. At home, parents can often have more choice in how they want to birth and can choose who their support people will be. Giving birth in the comfort of your own home can naturally increase your oxytocin levels which you need an abundance of, to birth effectively.

Statistics suggest there is less chance of intervention at home, (Scarf et al 2018) implying no clinical or statistical difference in risk between home and hospital for low risk women. Intervention rates are higher at hospital as you are being observed and this decreases the level of oxytocin. Look at the options and statistics then discuss your homebirth with your midwife. www.aims.org.uk have all the latest information on birth for parents. At the end of the day, it is imperative that as a mum you feel informed, safe and comfortable with your care.

Why are affirmations so important in pregnancy and birth?

How we, and others speak to ourselves can determine our belief system. Our subconscious mind is a very powerful place and determines how we feel about everyday situations. Words are powerful. Words are energy and can be the reason you are successful or not at any given task. Hypnobirthing uses gentle hypnotherapy in which positive affirmations are absorbed into your mind when you are in a relaxed state.

‘Mums-to-be’ will have audio recordings that they can listen to whilst in a relaxed state. When you first wake up in the morning and last thing before bed, your mind is in ‘theta state’ where your subconscious mind can absorb affirmations more effectively. It is also when your body is most relaxed. Affirmation cards are a good purchase to make in pregnancy so you can use them during pregnancy and birth. People often place them around the house so they can see them and repeat them during the day. You will be prepared and well-armed for your warrior-birth! See below my chosen favourite affirmations…

The hypnobirthing journey is not all hippie stuff like giving birth in a field. It is a mode of letting go. Letting go may sound like you are not in control - but it is in fact the complete opposite. By letting go of expectations, preconceptions and assumptions, a magical transformation takes place. It is in this moment that a deep confidence in the universe takes place. You allow birth to happen in a divinely guided way. You will have spent 6 months or more listening to powerful words and know that you are confident in your body and that you are safe. You will have trust that you will work with your baby to bring them home.

Good luck and enjoy this magical journey.
